Etsy is a marketplace where you can buy and sell digital and physical products. It is free to open a shop on the platform.

They charge a $0.20c fee for each listing you upload and this auto-renews every 4 months or when a product sells out. You can turn off this auto-renew feature.

Etsy also take a 6.5% fee of each sale you make.

Your shop may also be part of Etsy’s offsite ads which also encounters a fee when you make a sale through that unique link which is shared by Etsy.

If you don’t have enough funds in your Etsy payment account to pay the fees, then they will send you an invoice which you can pay within 15 days of receiving the invoice.

Can You Sell PLR Printable PDFS on Etsy?

If you are confused about Etsy's policy regarding selling PLR (Private Label Rights) customized printables and templates then this is the blog for you.

First, let's talk briefly about what PLR templates - Private Label Rights are. They are pre-made, done-for-you templates that you can purchase and resell in your own Etsy shop, website, blog or newsletter.

All you do is customize the templates and create printable digital downloads that your customers can purchase from your shop.

The reason people love PLR is because it saves you LOADS of time because you do not to create the layouts for your printable products from scratch! You get to do the most enjoyable part which is customizing, editing and making them your own gorgeous creations before you sell them online! You will also find Canva tutorial videos on my website to guide you on customizing our PLR templates.

There really is so much information online regarding selling PLR printables on Etsy and Gumroad! So much in fact that it can leave you feeling overwhelmed, drained and still with no real answers.

I have been sifting through Etsys policies and finding relevant information that will help you better understand how Etsy view what their sellers actually sell.

Because the question on everyone's lips is Can you sell PLR Templates on Etsy??!

And the answer is Yes!

As long as they are customized. It is so easy to customize our PLR templates like our gratitude journal templates and our manifestation journal templates.

What Would Happen if Etsy Discovered I was Reselling Non-customized PLR Products?

They could take down your listing, close your shop and you could potentially lose money on any sales you had made up to that point.

I have created a Canva tutorial library where you will learn how to make our PLR templates beautiful and unique and ready for sale on Etsy.

But what does Etsy say about PLR templates?

Etsy doesn't mention the word PLR in their terms and they do not say that PLR templates can't be sold in your shop.

What they do say is that the products have to be unique because there marketplace is for unique one of a kind items.

So I’m going to spill the tea now on what you need to know!

I visited Etsy's Handmade Policy House Rules today. This is what I learned.

Etsy class their sellers into two categories for the purposes of selling.

These categories are called Makers and Designers.

This is where it gets interesting. I must admit that when I found this information, it really did answer my questions!

Makers according to Etsy are ;

“ A maker is a seller who is physically making the items listed for sale in their Etsy shop. A maker might design their items in addition to making them, or they might follow a pattern or template that they did not design. Regardless, makers must be creating their items with their own hands (or tools).” (accessed 27/2/24)

My Interpretation - you can make a product to sell from a template you did not design (design means create from scratch). This is then where you need to customize your purchased PLR templates and make them your own creation. The layouts are done for you and when you follow my Canva tutorial videos you will see just how easy it is to transform your PLR templates.

Designers according to Etsy are ;

“ A designer is a seller who has come up with an original design, pattern, sketch, template, prototype, or plan to be produced by in-house shop members or a production partner. Simple customisation, such as selecting colours, shapes, or choosing from ready-made options is not considered design on Etsy.” (accessed 27/2/24)

My Interpretation - a designer creates something from scratch. All this means for you is that you don’t need to call yourself a designer in Etsy's eyes. Also remember that you do not have to disclose the fact that you purchased PLR templates from us, this is your private business.

When you are uploading your customized printable to your Etsy shop, it is a finished digital product that you created in the current year and that's it.

Gumroad

Can You Resell PLR Products on Gumroad?

The answer is no. I visited Gumroads Help Center to find out more. For a full comprehensive list of their prohibited products and activities, visit gumroad.com/prohibited. PLR products are No: 41 on this list.

Reselling PLR products of any kind is not allowed on their platform. I emailed them to ask if I customized the PLR templates, could I then upload them for sale and they emailed me back the next day and said no.

Gumroad will allow PLR templates and printables that are 100% your own creation to be sold on their platform so if you want to create these from scratch then you are free to do this.

What Would Happen if Gumroad Discovered You Reselling PLR Products?

They could take your listing down, close your shop and you could possibly lose money too. So it’s really not worth taking the chance.

Start off right on Etsy and Gumroad and you won’t have to worry.

Even though Gumroad doesn't allow PLR reselling, you shouldn’t feel like you are missing out because there are plenty of other places you can resell your customized printables. Such as Etsy or on your own website, through a Koji link or a newsletter or blog.

What is Gumroad?

Gumroad is an ecommerce platform that allows you to sell certain digital and physical products. It was set up in 2011. Gumroad Discover, under the main platform is a marketplace for buyers and sellers, There are no monthly fees to pay and they only take a fee of 10% off each sale you make. This does not include payment processor fees such as PayPal.
